Fidesz MPs vote in favour of amendment on Russian-style law in Justice Committee, then deny it
On Tuesday, Fidesz members of the parliament's justice committee voted through an amendment that would allow the government to take away the 1% income tax donations from organizations listed by the Sovereignty Protection Office as early as this year. Since the deadline to designate 1% of one's income tax to an NGO or foundation of their choosing was 20 May, and the amendment was submitted on 26 May, members of the opposition have pointed out that the amendment is illegal because it would retroactively override donations that have already been made. However, when we questioned them about this, Fidesz representatives in the committee kept repeating that the bill does not mention anything of the sort, and that they are merely taking action against foreign influence and creating transparency.
